This week, I offered some perspectives on What Makes a Good Backup Appliance, and I’d like to offer some further perspective on these types of products.
My thoughts on What Makes a Good Backup Appliance include:
Part 1 – Understanding the appeal of PBBAs (turnkey solutions)
Part 2 – Basic guidance on the value-prop of PBBAs
Part 3 – Some ideas on what makes a good / better / best PBBA
Those blogs were inspired by several anecdotal conversations with IT decision makers, some recent vendor events, and ESG’s upcoming Data Protection Appliance research report, which explores all four types of DPAs, of which PBBAs are (just) the red box.
In addition, the ESG Lab Analysts were quick to remind me of some of the more recent hands-on technical validations that ESG has done on PBBAs:
- Dell DL1000 running AppAssure
- Dell DL4000 running AppAssure
- Symantec Backup Exec 3600
- Symantec NetBackup 5230
ESG Lab has done several hundred evaluations (see all ESG Lab reports here), but those identified were a few of the most recent PBBAs (red-box)—with more being actively tested from other vendors as we speak. Later, I’ll blog on for what to look in other DPA categories and perhaps highlight some different ESG Lab reports.
